Our Approach

What we sell, and why safety looks different across each category

My Luxe Backyard, operated by Navarro Living LLC, sells pergolas, gazebos, patio furniture, fire pits, saunas, and cold plunges that combine structural materials, gas appliances, electrical heating equipment, and refrigeration components. Each of these carries different safety considerations, and we believe you deserve to understand them before you buy, not after.

This page is a category-by-category account of the certifications our suppliers carry, the safety standards that govern outdoor gas and electrical appliances in the United States, and the installation and use guidance that keeps each product safe in normal backyard use.

We wrote this page specifically for the products we carry. Where a specific safety certification or rating applies to an item, it is documented on that item's own product page; this policy explains what those markings mean and why they matter.

What the words on a safety label actually mean

Safety terminology gets used loosely. Here's exactly what each term means when we use it on this page or on a product listing.

Listed / Certified

A product or component independently tested by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory, such as ETL (Intertek) or UL, and found to meet a specific published safety standard.

BTU Rating

British Thermal Units per hour, the measure of heat output for a gas appliance such as a propane fire pit. A higher BTU rating means more heat and faster fuel use.

Clearance Distance

The minimum safe distance manufacturers specify between an appliance, like a fire pit or sauna heater, and combustible surfaces, structures, or materials.

Recall

A manufacturer or CPSC-initiated correction, repair, or removal of a product already sold, issued when a safety defect is identified after the product reaches consumers.

Safety By Product Type

What to know before you set up each category we sell

Outdoor structures, gas appliances, electrical equipment, and furniture each carry distinct safety profiles. Here is what applies to each category we carry, and where to find the exact specification for the unit you're considering.

Pergolas & Louvered Roofs

Anchoring required · Two-person assembly

Aluminum and steel-frame pergolas are freestanding structures that must be anchored to a patio, deck, or footing to resist wind uplift. Manufacturer anchoring instructions ship with every unit and should always be followed for your local wind conditions. Frames can be heavy, so a second person is recommended for safe assembly, and any motorized or manual retractable canopy should only be operated as described in its instructions.

Gazebos

Load rating · Wind & snow guidance

Hardtop steel and aluminum gazebos are engineered to a specific wind and snow load; check your product page for the rated tolerances before installing in an area with heavy snowfall or high wind exposure. Like pergolas, gazebos should be securely anchored to a stable surface, and netting or curtain hardware should be inspected periodically for wear.

Patio Furniture Sets

Weight capacity · Stable, level ground

Each piece in a furniture set carries a manufacturer weight capacity, listed on the product page; exceeding it can compromise frame welds or rattan and wicker weave over time. Sets should be placed on level, stable ground, and cushions should be stored or covered during prolonged rain to prevent mildew and material breakdown.

Fire Pits

ANSI Z21.97/CSA 2.41 · 24in+ clearance

Propane fire pits in this category are built to the safety conventions of ANSI Z21.97/CSA 2.41, the U.S. and Canadian standard for outdoor decorative gas appliances, which covers ignition, wind, and rain performance. Check your specific unit's product page and included documentation for its certification mark. We recommend a minimum 24-inch clearance from combustible structures, furniture, and overhanging materials for any open-flame fire pit, propane or wood-burning, and placement on a non-combustible surface such as stone, concrete, or gravel.

Saunas

ETL certified heater · GFCI-protected circuit

Electric sauna heaters in this collection carry ETL certification, meaning they have been independently tested by Intertek to recognized U.S. electrical safety standards for heating appliances. Outdoor electrical equipment should always be connected to a GFCI-protected (ground-fault circuit interrupter) circuit, consistent with the National Electrical Code's requirements for outdoor receptacles, and installation should follow the manufacturer's electrical specifications exactly.

Cold Plunges

Chiller: GFCI-protected · Use guidance

Chiller units draw standard household electrical current and, like any outdoor electrical appliance, should be connected to a GFCI-protected circuit. Cold immersion carries its own physiological considerations; we recommend reviewing the manufacturer's guidance on session length and consulting a physician if you have a cardiovascular condition before using a cold plunge.

Specific certifications, load ratings, and clearance requirements vary by model. The definitive source for your unit is the manufacturer documentation that ships with your order; email us at support@myluxebackyard.com with your product name if you'd like that documentation before you buy.
Regulatory Framework

The federal codes and standards behind this policy

Outdoor structures, gas appliances, and electrical equipment in the United States sit under a layered set of federal oversight and recognized safety codes. Here's the framework that applies to what we sell.

Federal Product Safety Oversight

CPSC jurisdiction
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has authority over the safety of furniture, structures, and outdoor appliances we sell, and can require recalls of products found to pose an unreasonable risk.
Mandatory recall participation
If a manufacturer or the CPSC issues a recall for a product we've sold, we contact affected customers using the information from their order and post recall notices to our site.
Reporting a hazard
If you believe a product you bought from us poses a safety risk beyond an individual defect, we want to know immediately, and you can also report it directly to the CPSC.

Gas, Electrical & Installation Codes

NFPA 58, the LP-Gas Code
The National Fire Protection Association's LP-Gas Code governs the safe storage, handling, and use of propane cylinders, which applies to how you store and connect propane tanks for fire pits.
National Electrical Code outdoor rules
Outdoor electrical equipment, including sauna heaters and cold plunge chillers, should be installed on GFCI-protected circuits in accordance with NEC requirements for wet and damp outdoor locations.
Local permits and codes
Some municipalities require permits or have specific rules for permanent structures, open-flame appliances, or electrical installations. We recommend checking with your local building or fire department before installation.

This section is provided for transparency and general information. It is not legal, electrical, or fire-safety advice, and codes vary by state and municipality. For installation involving gas lines or permanent electrical wiring, we recommend using a licensed professional.

The Response Process

How we handle a safety concern or recall

01

Tell us right away

Email support@myluxebackyard.com or call 609-354-7215 with your order number and a description of the concern.

02

We pause and investigate

We stop recommending the affected item if needed and look into whether it's an isolated issue or a broader manufacturer concern.

03

We coordinate with the manufacturer, or the CPSC

For confirmed defects, we work directly with the manufacturer's safety team, and escalate to the CPSC where appropriate.

04

You get a clear resolution

Repair, replacement, refund, or recall instructions, confirmed in writing, at no cost to you for a verified safety defect.

What this page does not replace

This Product Safety & Compliance Policy explains the safety standards and practices behind our products. It is not a substitute for the specific manufacturer manual, safety warnings, and assembly instructions included with your order, which should always be your primary reference for safe setup and use.

How this fits with our other policies

Warranty coverage for defects is addressed separately in our Warranty & Warranty Disclaimer Policy. Returns are addressed in our Return & Refund Policy. This page sits alongside both, focused specifically on the safety certifications and rules that apply to what we sell.
