Our Approach

A retailer's honest account of how sauna safety actually works here

My Luxe Backyard is owned and operated by Navarro Living LLC. We are a retailer, not a medical provider or an electrician, and every sauna we currently sell is an electric barrel sauna built for outdoor backyard use, running on a 240V dedicated circuit and supporting both wet and dry heat sessions.

Because a sauna involves both high-voltage electrical equipment and sustained heat exposure to the human body, we wrote this page to walk through, in plain language, the electrical installation steps, the health factors worth discussing with a doctor first, and sensible session habits. We do not make medical claims about what a sauna can treat, cure, or prevent, and this page is not medical advice.

This page is general safety guidance for the saunas we sell. It does not replace the manufacturer's printed installation and use manual that ships with your specific unit, or the advice of a licensed electrician and your own physician.

What the words in this policy actually mean

Sauna and electrical terminology gets used loosely. Here is exactly what each term means when we use it on this page or on a product listing.

ETL Certification

Independent third-party testing confirming an electric heater meets recognized North American safety standards for construction, grounding, and overheat protection. ETL marks carry the same regulatory weight as UL in the United States.

Wet / Dry Sauna

Dry mode uses the electric heater alone for low-humidity heat. Wet mode adds water poured over heated stones to raise humidity and create steam. The same unit can typically run either mode depending on how you use it that session.

Heat Stress

The body's physical response to sustained high-temperature exposure, which can include elevated heart rate, sweating, lightheadedness, and dehydration. Heat stress risk increases with session length, heat level, and certain health conditions.

Contraindication

A health condition or circumstance, such as pregnancy or certain heart conditions, where sauna use carries elevated risk and should only be undertaken after talking with a physician. We list common examples later on this page.

Our Sauna Collection

What we sell, and the safety points each one calls for

Each sauna we carry runs on a 240V electric heater. Full specifications and the manufacturer's printed safety instructions ship with every unit and also live on the individual product page.

Electrical Safety Essentials

High-voltage equipment deserves a licensed installer

Every sauna we sell runs on a 240V circuit, which falls outside standard household outlet wiring. These four habits cover the basics for every unit we sell.

Hire a licensed electrician

Have a licensed electrician install the dedicated 240V circuit and make the final heater connection. This is not a DIY wiring project, and most manufacturer warranties require professional installation to remain valid.

Pull the required permit

Most municipalities require an electrical permit and inspection for a new dedicated circuit. Your electrician can typically handle this directly with your local building department as part of the installation.

GFCI protection where required

The National Electrical Code requires ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection for many outdoor and wet-location electrical installations. Confirm with your electrician whether GFCI protection applies to your specific setup and location.

Keep water away from wiring

Never pour water near the heater's electrical connections or control panel, and keep the heater's protective guard in place at all times to prevent accidental contact with hot surfaces or splashing water.

If you ever notice a burning smell, sparking, a tripped breaker that won't reset, or exposed wiring: disconnect power at the breaker if it is safe to do so and do not use the sauna again until a licensed electrician has inspected and cleared it.

Health Considerations

Sauna use is generally well tolerated, but it is not for everyone

We are a retailer, not a healthcare provider, and nothing here is medical advice or a claim that sauna use treats, cures, or prevents any disease or condition. The information below is general and commonly cited; your own physician is the right source for guidance specific to you.

Talk to a doctor first if you are

Pregnant, living with heart disease or uncontrolled high or low blood pressure, managing diabetes, recovering from a recent surgery or illness, or taking medications that affect blood pressure, heart rate, or hydration, including diuretics. Children and older adults may also need shorter sessions and closer supervision. This is a general list, not a complete one; when in doubt, ask your physician before your first session.

Habits that lower the risk for everyone

Never use a sauna under the influence of alcohol, sedatives, or other substances that affect alertness or blood pressure. Stay hydrated before and after a session, keep individual sessions reasonably short, especially the first few times, exit immediately if you feel dizzy, nauseous, or unwell, and never use a sauna alone if you have any underlying health concern.

Legal Framework

The federal and state rules behind this policy

This page is written to operate within, not around, the product safety and consumer protection laws that already govern electric sauna appliances and the claims a retailer can make about them. Two bodies of rules matter most here.

Federal Product & Advertising Standards

CPSC oversight
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission sets and enforces safety requirements for consumer electric heating appliances and maintains a public recall database we encourage every owner to check periodically.
UL / ETL listing
Electric sauna heaters sold in the U.S. should carry independent safety certification, such as UL or ETL, confirming the unit was tested against recognized electrical and fire safety standards.
No unsupported health claims
Under FTC advertising rules, a retailer cannot claim a product treats, cures, or prevents a disease without competent scientific evidence. We do not make those claims, and we encourage you to be cautious of any seller who does.

State & Local Electrical Code

National Electrical Code, applied locally
States and municipalities adopt and enforce the National Electrical Code (NEC) with their own amendments. Permit requirements, GFCI rules, and inspection processes vary by where you live.
Electrician licensing
Every state licenses electrical contractors differently. Confirm your installer holds a current license in good standing in your state before work begins.
HOA and building permits
Homeowners associations and local building departments may require separate approval for a permanent backyard structure or new electrical service. Checking with your HOA or local building department is your responsibility.

This section is provided for transparency and general information. It is not legal, electrical, or medical advice, and requirements vary by state, county, and municipality. Before installation or first use, confirm current requirements with a licensed electrician and, for any health question, your physician.

Before You Step In

Four habits for every session, start to finish

01

Prepare and hydrate

Drink water beforehand, avoid alcohol and heavy meals right before a session, and check that the heater, vents, and door are functioning normally before you go in.

02

Start short, listen to your body

Begin with shorter sessions, especially the first few times, and avoid lying directly against the heater guard. Exit right away if you feel dizzy, overheated, or unwell.

03

Supervise children closely

Children should only use a sauna with direct adult supervision and shorter session times. Never leave a child unattended inside or near an active sauna.

04

Cool down and power off

Rehydrate after your session, allow your body to cool gradually, and turn the heater off and let it cool completely before cleaning or covering the unit.

What this disclaimer does not cover

This page is general safety guidance for the saunas we currently sell. It is not a medical opinion about whether sauna use is appropriate for you, not an electrical inspection report for your specific installation, and not a substitute for the manufacturer's printed manual, which always governs for your exact model's clearance, ventilation, and electrical requirements.

No claims about diagnosis, treatment, or cure

We do not claim that any sauna sold on this site diagnoses, treats, cures, or prevents any medical condition. Where customers describe wellness benefits in reviews, those reflect personal experience, not a medical claim made by Navarro Living LLC, and individual results vary.
